Binary Files
If you want to send binary files to me, you have a few options:
- E-MAIL:
- You can E-mail the file(s) to me. How you do this depends on
what type of e-mail client you use. The easiest way is if
your e-mail client supports binary "attachments".
In a windowing environment such as on a Mac or Windows machine,
you usally select an "attach" button or menu item which
will bring up a window where you specify which file(s) you want
to attach. If your interface is text only, how you attach files
will vary. In any case, consult your e-mail client documentation
for more details.
If you use a UN*X operating system, there is a mailer (amoung others)
called Pine which allows binary attachments, but you can still send binary
files even if you use the "plain jane" mail program.
You'll need to use a program called "uuencode" to
convert the binary file into ASCII format first though. To
do this conversion, type:
uuencode binary_file.bin binary_file.bin > ascii_file.txt
ascii_file.txt can be included in your e-mail message
and I'll decode it once I get it. You can actually send off
the binary file to me without having to go through all those
intermediate steps by typing:
uuencode binary_file.bin binary_file.bin | mail jon@ultralighthomepage.com
Please note that if you do this, all I'll get is the binary file with
no explanation, so I'd appreciate a seperate e-mail message telling
me what the file is that you sent me.
- WWW:
- A third option is that, if you have a WWW page, you could put the
file on your server, and send me a message letting me know what
the URL to it is, and I'll go grab it myself.
If any of this is not clear, or you need more information, please
let me know.
